DJ Fred Matters fields regular calls from his pal Snoop Dogg. He’s spun records at intimate parties (“you know, like three or four hundred people”) for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Prince; as well as massive clubs with 7,000 people filing through the doors. And this is just in the last few months.

Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “DJs are the new rock stars”? Well, Frederick Grimmel is the DJ to Rock Stars. And while he’s landed in this role, it’s not something he set out toward.

DJ Fred at Addiction nightclub “I was a trained and studied jazz musician,” Grimmel says during an exclusive interview for THE MODERN HONOLULU. He learned and played a variety of instruments when he studied at the Musician’s Institute. Yet, he was already immersed in the nightclub scene, having worked his way through various companies in Los Angeles.
